Valley of the Fires


On the road between Carrizozo and San Antonio, there are the Malpais. You are driving along seeing typical desert...

Then you come across a sign for the Valley of the fires..

Then you see the terrain change and begin to notice the black lava. The Spanish explorers who came here called this the Malpais - which means Badlands.

Close up you can see the pooling patterns in the lava that has been here for a thousand years.

    Legend has it that if you take a piece of lava you will have bad luck. They have letters from all over sending back the rock they took, hoping to remove the bad luck spell.
